In 2009, International Bird Rescue began marking pelicans with colored leg bands to make them easier to identify.Upon release from either of their two hospitals, each brown pelican is fitted with a federal band on one leg and a large numbered blue band on the other.
Currently there are just under 1,000 pelicans sporting a blue ring, and they're being spotted from Mexico to the state of Washington.
